Director of Operations

Position Summary:

This position will work closely with the General Manager to ensure our client’s expectations are met and our production resources are properly aligned. The Client Services team and the Department Supervisors/Managers will look to the Director of Operations for accurate and timely schedules, guidance on quality issues, direction and support for purchasing/ outsourcing.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Ensure our teams have the tools and resources to be successful. Help them maintain focus on the common purpose of “Satisfy our Customers, Profitably”.


Integrate with Department Supervisors/Managers to:

  • Share upcoming workloads
  • Review production assignments
  • Ensure teams are properly allocated to the work and tasks at hand
  • Ensure work is allocated to the appropriate equipment
  • Identify hiring needs

Work with Leadership to:

  • Maintain a key focus on process improvement and production efficiency
  • Understand and foster our culture throughout the organization
  • Identify equipment needs, research and recommend
  • Continually monitor staffing needs
  • Communicate workload and overtime requirements

Collaborate with Human Resources to:

  • Develop and update job descriptions
  • Recruit and conduct effective interviews and make hiring decisions
  • Maintain and manage excellent employee relations
  • Conduct timely and effective employee touch-base meetings
  • Utilize the Predictive Index for candidates, employees and to improve working relationships

Scheduling/On-Time Delivery - Develop and manage the daily schedule to ensure customer expectations are met.

  • Work with the Pace development team to define the reports necessary to provide timely and accurate schedules to Production.
  • Work closely with the Client Services team to understand their client's workload, requirements, and expectations.
  • Generate daily schedules that convey job priorities and deadlines. Ensure schedule requirements are understood and are being met to the best of the Department Supervisors abilities.
  • React quickly to schedule/priority changes and ensure the Client Service team and Production Supervisors adjust appropriately.

Quality - Defined as "meeting client expectations." Understand client requirements and assist the Department Supervisors in achieving them.

  • Ensure Production Supervisors understand job level quality requirements and have the proper tools and resources to meet them.
  • Participate in and/or conduct press checks as/when needed.
  • Spot-check quality on the more complex projects as they progress throughout production.
  • Develop and maintain tools for tracking rework, document the circumstances, impact, quantity, cost, and reasons. Use that data to help Client Service and the Department Supervisors drive process improvements. Share the report monthly with Senior Management.

Safety – Ensure OSHA safety regulations are adhered to as well as company safety processes and procedures are followed. Assist HR in investigating any injuries that could have been prevented and make changes to processes where necessary.


Purchasing/Outsourcing Support - Assist Resource Manager as needed to ensure our purchasing and outsource expenditures are cost effective and timely.




  • High school or GED required.
  • 10+ years’ experience in a commercial print facility (offset & digital)
  • 10+ years’ leadership experience overseeing 20+ employees
  • Additional years of education and experience may be substituted for each other, as determined by Human Resources

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated leadership skills, with progressively increasing areas of responsibility
  • Strong interpersonal and team building skills to create an environment where employees achieve their best work.
  • Ability to communicate well verbally and in written format with all levels within the company, vendors, clients, etc.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to balance multiple projects at once to ensure client success.
  • Ability to rapidly process and comprehend detailed information and think strategically and creatively to troubleshoot immediate issues while considering implications and consequences of their decisions.
  • Mechanically inclined with large, complex machinery.
  • Work experience in a fast paced, deadline driven environment.
  • Results driven ability to execute deadlines.
  • Expertise for creating best practices and workflow efficiencies.
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office products.
