A Celebration of Platinum Prairie Seeds
On March 17th, a Ceremonial Seeding Celebration took place in the SE 40-acre quadrant of the new addition to Pheasant Branch Conservancy. Dane County Executive Joe Parisi was joined by Dane County Parks staff, members of The Friends of Pheasant Branch Conservancy and staff of The Clean Lakes Alliance, as well as several generous donors and other interested stakeholders, to commemorate the successful first year of the Seed the Need fundraising campaign and the actual seeding of this first of four 40-acre quadrants.
Seed the Need 2021 CampaignGreat prairies grow from great seed stock. We need your helping creating a “Platinum Prairie” in the new 160-acre of the Pheasant Branch Conservancy.
In 2019, Dane County acquired 160-acres of farmland to be restored to prairie and wetlands that will “significantly reduce stormwater volume due to increased water infiltration into the ground… [and] improve water quality by reducing sediment and phosphorus runoff within the Pheasant Branch Watershed, positively impacting Lake Mendota.” This former dairy farm immediately adjacent to the northern border of Pheasant Branch Conservancy contains the headwaters for an intermittent stream into Pheasant Branch Creek and is a recharge area of Frederick Spring, presenting a tremendous opportunity for crucial stormwater management and water quality improvements.
Dane County has removed the structures on the property and completed the construction of sediment basins for stormwater management, in conjunction with wetland restoration. Three of four 40-acre agricultural fields will continue to be cultivated with cover crops during the phased conversion to native prairie. Thanks to our generous donors, the first quadrant has been seeded with an initial seed mix containing 175 species of seeds - a Platinum Prairie.
The Friends of Pheasant Branch Conservancy will launch its second year of the “Seed the Need” campaign on March 25th, 2021 to raise $25,000 for seeding the second quadrant of the new prairie. Thanks to our generous Friends, Bruce and Linda Christenson, $5000 of “Seed” money has already been provided.
