The Art & Science of Emotional Intelligence (EQ): A Personal Look at Navigating Our Emotional State of Mind
Presented By: Mike Baldwin, Account Manager with the Madison College Business & Industry Services Team
What does it mean to be ‘emotionally intelligent?’ Of the multitudes of interpersonal interactions that we might engage (in), in any given day, have you ever wondered why you think the way that you do, why you feel one way or another, and why you react in a certain way to the situation at hand…? What is it that provokes a happy feeling…a sad feeling…anger…afraid…ashamed?
Our ability to accurately and appropriately interpret our feelings, then manage them within the world around us continues to be a powerful show of self-control, understanding, and strength for any one individual. In our personal space, to understand our ‘triggers’ is a sign of maturity and intrinsic self-recognition of those core emotions that we all have as human beings.
Which leads to a question: if we do not have a ‘pulse’ on our own emotions, how can we be expected to manage (to) the emotions of others in our roles as leader, colleague, and relationship partner…?
For this conversation, let’s talk about our emotional state – how we recognize and interpret our emotions, how we act in light of them, how we react to different situations and stimuli, and how we socialize and engage in the relationships that come our way.
We will explore the basis for emotional intelligence and the background that has become an integral part of a leader’s playbook. We will also talk to some strategies in managing your own emotional library, and then how you manage the playing field before you, be it with your work colleagues, friends, family, and/or everyday acquaintances and encounters. Sometimes you get to choose your emotional state and response; other times your emotions get to choose for you. Whatever the case, we are all unique creatures, and our emotions say a lot about who we are.
Let’s take a personal look at EQ and what makes you ‘tick’….!
